2018 Rising Star Leading Light Award

Dr. Debby Basu, Manager, Center for Global Health, American Society for Clinical Pathology

Dr. Basu has demonstrated significant contributions to the field of global health research, including the development of diagnostic tools, infectious disease control and prevention, and research capacity building. She uses her knowledge and expertise to help empower the world's poor, marginalized and at-risk populations through improved healthcare.

After graduating from Indiana University with a degree in Biology and Biological Sciences, Dr. Basu quickly completed a Masters degree in Biology at IUPUI and began her Doctoral pursuits in Microbiology and Immunology at Emory University.

Following completion of her Ph.D., Debby spent the following year in Lusaka, Zambia as the NIH Fogarty Global Health Fellow. There, she developed an innovative and highly sensitive technique for early identification of HIV infection, which is essential to delaying disease progression and reduces the spread of HIV.  Dr. Basu has also designed, conducted and evaluated tuberculosis experiments at the Center for Innovation in Global Health Technologies at Northwestern University. She currently oversees the Mozambique global health division at the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

Dr. Basu is making a tremendous impact in the world very early in her career, and we believe she will make significant contributions through the remainder of her career.
