"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." - Aristotle
Sahara Williams is an engineer, an entrepreneur, an attorney, an animal lover, and small business advocate. She operated her own engineering and construction management firm for nine years and served as the executive director of a nonprofit equestrian learning center for youth for five years. She now serves as a gubernatorial appointee to the Indiana Real Estate Commission and works as an Intellectual Property Attorney. Sahara earned her J.D. from the IU McKinney School of Law. She graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering from North Carolina A&T State University and earned a MS in Civil Engineering from Purdue University.
Sahara’s professional careers--engineer, equestrian, project manager, entrepreneur, and now IP attorney—have been consistently male dominated. In addition to the duty of delivering an excellent work product, she finds there is a daily pressure on women to prove that they have and deserve a place in the room. Even though they may not be with her physically on a daily basis, having the support, encouragement, listening ear, and words of wisdom of other professional women has sustained and propelled her. She is so excited to elevate her role in the Women & Hi Tech family and to have the opportunity to surround herself with so many other STEM women and allies that are advancing the same causes of diversity and equity for women that have been integral with her adult life.
In her role as a Board Member and as Networking Director, she wants to see the reach of the thoughtful and supportive programming of Women & Hi Tech expand beyond Central Indiana to the entire state (and beyond).
Sahara is originally from Cleveland, Ohio (#DawgPound, #Cavs, #BaseballTeamToBeRenamed) but permanently resides on the west side of Indianapolis. She enjoys keeping abreast of public policy issues and exploring the great outdoors. She is an alumnus of the Stanley K. Lacy Executive Leadership Series (Class XXXVII), the Richard G. Lugar Excellence in Public Service Series (2012-2013) and the IBJ 2013 Forty Under 40 Class as well as a Soror of Alpha Kappa Alpha.
Her four-legged children are Fraggle (15) and Kiki (13). If you visit her at Desert Moon Ranch you might also see a couple horses, about a dozen wild rabbits, 3 hawks, a host of squirrels and chipmunks, and Thimba, the cat king of the Ranch who oversees them all.
